Eustachian Tube Dysfunction Treatment

Eustachian Tube Dysfunction Treatment in Chevy Chase, MD

Evaluation and Treatment Options for Ear Pressure, Fullness, and Discomfort

The eustachian tubes connect the middle ear to the back of the nose and upper throat. These tubes help equalize ear pressure and drain fluid from the middle ear. They typically open when you swallow, yawn, or chew.

When the eustachian tubes become blocked or do not function properly, it can lead to a condition called eustachian tube dysfunction, or ETD.

At Bethesda ENT and Sinus Center, conveniently located in Chevy Chase, Maryland, we provide comprehensive ENT evaluations to help determine whether eustachian tube dysfunction may be contributing to ear pressure, fullness, muffled hearing, or recurring ear discomfort.

Learn More About ETD Treatment

What Are the Symptoms of ETD?

Symptoms of ETD vary from person to person. Common signs may include:

  • A feeling of fullness or pressure in the ear
  • Ear pain or discomfort
  • A plugged or clogged sensation in one or both ears
  • Muffled or reduced hearing
  • Clicking or popping sounds in the ear
  • Ringing in the ears, also called tinnitus

Symptoms may worsen during altitude changes, such as flying, driving through mountains, riding elevators, or scuba diving. If symptoms persist, worsen, or interfere with daily activities, an ENT evaluation may help identify possible causes.

Could ETD Cause Chronic Ear Infections?

When the eustachian tubes do not function properly, fluid may build up in the middle ear. In some patients, this fluid buildup may contribute to recurring ear infections or ongoing ear pressure.

Some patients may also experience symptoms such as:

  • Dizziness
  • Balance concerns
  • Headaches
  • Fever
  • Nausea or vomiting

These symptoms do not always indicate ETD and may be associated with other ear, sinus, or neurologic conditions. A comprehensive ENT evaluation can help determine what may be contributing to your symptoms and which treatment options may be appropriate.

Treatment Options for ETD

ETD treatment varies depending on clinical findings, symptom severity, underlying causes, and overall health. Treatment may include non-surgical or procedural options.

Medications for Mild or Temporary ETD

Some cases of ETD may improve with medical management, such as:

  • Decongestants when appropriate
  • Nasal corticosteroid sprays
  • Antihistamines for allergy-related symptoms
  • Over-the-counter pain relievers

Temporary ETD related to a cold, allergies, or altitude changes may improve on its own. Persistent or recurring symptoms may require further evaluation.

Balloon Dilation for Chronic ETD

If symptoms do not improve with medical management or become chronic, your provider may discuss balloon dilation as a treatment option.

Balloon dilation is a minimally invasive procedure that may be appropriate for select patients with chronic ETD. Not all patients with ETD need balloon dilation. Your ENT provider can evaluate your symptoms, medical history, ear and nasal anatomy, and clinical findings to determine whether this option may be appropriate.

Balloon dilation may involve:

  • A minimally invasive outpatient procedure
  • Use of a balloon catheter designed to help open the eustachian tube
  • No external incisions or visible scarring
  • Local anesthesia or other comfort measures, depending on the treatment plan
  • Temporary recovery restrictions based on your provider’s instructions

The procedure is designed to improve eustachian tube function by gently widening the eustachian tube opening. Individual results and recovery timelines vary.

How Balloon Dilation Works

During balloon dilation, a small balloon catheter is guided through the nostril to the opening of the eustachian tube. The balloon is gently inflated for a short period to widen the passage, then deflated and removed.

Your provider will review the potential risks, benefits, alternatives, and expected recovery before recommending treatment.
