Septoplasty in Bethesda, MD

Septoplasty in Bethesda, MD

A Surgical Treatment Option for Chronic Nasal Obstruction

Persistent nasal obstruction can make it difficult to breathe comfortably through your nose and may interfere with sleep, exercise, and daily activities. One possible cause of ongoing nasal congestion is a deviated septum.

At Bethesda ENT and Sinus Center, conveniently located in Chevy Chase, Maryland, we provide comprehensive nasal and sinus evaluations to determine whether a deviated septum may be contributing to your symptoms and whether septoplasty may be an appropriate treatment option based on your clinical findings, symptom severity, and nasal anatomy.

What Is Septoplasty?

Septoplasty is an outpatient surgical procedure designed to correct a deviated septum.

A deviated septum occurs when the wall of bone and cartilage separating the nasal passages is displaced or off-center. This structural difference may contribute to chronic nasal congestion, reduced airflow, difficulty breathing through the nose, and recurrent sinus symptoms in some patients.

Septoplasty is performed to improve airflow by repositioning or reshaping the nasal septum. Individual results vary depending on nasal anatomy, healing, and other factors.

Your ENT provider can determine whether septoplasty may be an appropriate treatment option based on your symptoms, examination, and overall health.

When Is Septoplasty an Option?

Not everyone with a deviated septum requires surgery. Septoplasty may be considered for patients who experience:

  • Chronic nasal congestion that does not improve with medical treatment
  • Difficulty breathing through one or both nostrils
  • Frequent sinus infections
  • Persistent postnasal drip
  • Recurrent nosebleeds
  • Sleep-related breathing concerns that may be associated with structural nasal obstruction

Many of these symptoms can have multiple causes. A comprehensive ENT evaluation can help determine whether a deviated septum may be contributing to your symptoms and whether septoplasty may be appropriate.

What Is Recovery Like After Septoplasty?

Septoplasty is typically performed as an outpatient procedure, allowing most patients to return home the same day.

During recovery, you may experience:

  • Mild swelling, congestion, or discomfort during the first several days
  • Prescription or over-the-counter pain medication, if recommended by your provider
  • Temporary nasal packing or splints in some cases
  • A follow-up visit to monitor healing and recovery
  • Temporary restrictions on strenuous activity, as directed by your provider

Recovery experiences and healing timelines vary from patient to patient. During your consultation, your provider will explain what you can generally expect before and after the procedure.

What Are the Risks and Considerations?

Septoplasty is generally well tolerated. However, as with any surgical procedure, potential risks and complications may include:

  • Bleeding
  • Infection
  • Swelling or temporary discomfort
  • Persistent nasal obstruction
  • Changes in nasal appearance
  • The potential need for additional surgery, although this is uncommon

Before treatment, your provider will discuss the potential benefits, risks, alternatives, and expected recovery to help you make an informed decision.
