Deviated Septum Treatment in Bethesda, MD

Deviated Septum Treatment in Bethesda, MD

Individualized Evaluation and Treatment Plans

A deviated septum is a structural variation of the nasal septum that may contribute to persistent nasal obstruction, chronic congestion, difficulty breathing through the nose, and recurring sinus symptoms.

At Bethesda ENT and Sinus Center, conveniently located in Chevy Chase, Maryland, we provide comprehensive nasal and sinus evaluations to determine whether a deviated septum may be contributing to nasal obstruction, chronic congestion, recurring sinus symptoms, or difficulty breathing through the nose.

What Is a Deviated Septum?

A deviated septum occurs when the nasal septum is off-center or misaligned. The nasal septum is the wall of bone and cartilage that separates the nasal cavity into the left and right nasal passages.

A deviated septum may be present at birth, develop naturally over time, or result from injury or trauma to the nose. For some patients, it may contribute to persistent nasal obstruction, frequent sinus infections, congestion, or breathing difficulties.

What Are the Symptoms of a Deviated Septum?

Symptoms can vary from person to person. Common signs that may be associated with a deviated septum include:

  • Persistent nasal congestion
  • Difficulty breathing through one or both nostrils
  • Frequent sinus infections
  • Persistent postnasal drip
  • Facial pressure or discomfort
  • Disrupted sleep or snoring

If symptoms are persistent, worsening, or interfering with sleep, breathing, or daily activities, an ENT evaluation may help identify contributing factors.

Deviated Septum Diagnosis

To evaluate a deviated septum, your ENT provider may review your symptoms, medical history, and breathing concerns, then examine the inside of your nose.

Evaluation may include nasal endoscopy or imaging when appropriate. These tools can help assess nasal anatomy, septal position, inflammation, and other possible contributors to nasal obstruction.

Deviated Septum Treatment

Treatment recommendations vary based on clinical findings, nasal anatomy, symptom severity, and overall health. Depending on your needs, treatment may include non-surgical or surgical options.

Non-Surgical Treatment Options

Some symptoms related to nasal congestion or inflammation may improve with medical management, such as:

  • Decongestants
  • Antihistamines
  • Saline nasal rinses
  • Nasal corticosteroid sprays

These options may help reduce swelling or irritation in some patients, but they do not correct the underlying structural deviation of the septum.

Surgical Treatment Option: Septoplasty

For patients with persistent nasal obstruction related to a deviated septum, septoplasty may be considered. Septoplasty is an outpatient surgical procedure designed to reposition or reshape the nasal septum to improve airflow.

Following your evaluation, your provider will discuss what to expect before, during, and after septoplasty. This may include:

  • An outpatient procedure performed through the inside of the nose
  • No external incision in most cases
  • Temporary swelling, congestion, or mild discomfort during recovery
  • Follow-up care to monitor healing
  • Temporary activity restrictions as directed by your provider

As with any surgical procedure, septoplasty has potential risks, including bleeding, infection, persistent nasal obstruction, septal perforation, or the possible need for additional treatment. Your provider will review the potential risks, benefits, alternatives, and expected recovery during your consultation.

Recovery timelines and results vary based on anatomy, healing, and individual treatment factors.
